What’s an AI revolution? A look back to see forward

Understanding Revolutions: A Historical Perspective

Revolutions aren't just about sudden change; they're about transformative shifts that redefine the way we live and work. Think back to the Industrial Revolution.

There was a time when furniture was handcrafted, and craftsmen rejected the idea of machines taking over their art. It didn't matter what the craftsmen thought or felt about this new technology, the industrial revolution swept across the world and changed everything!

The AI revolution is no different. It's a shift that's bigger than the first Automobile, Personal Computer or  iPhone, and it's starting to happen right now.

Comparison to the Industrial Revolution: A Shift in Paradigms

The AI revolution is akin to the industrial revolution in many ways.

It's not just about new tools or technologies; it's about a fundamental change in how we approach business, customer engagement, and even our daily lives.

Just as the industrial revolution transformed craftsmanship into mass production, the AI revolution is transforming the way we interact with technology, data, and each other.

It's not about replacing human effort; it's about enhancing it, making it more efficient, more insightful, and more aligned with customer needs.

Inaction is Not an Option: Staying Relevant and Competitive

In the face of such a transformative shift, inaction is not an option. The same shift that we saw in the industrial revolution will happen with the AI revolution. If you're not doing something with it, you risk being disrupted.

It's not about fear or resistance; it's about embracing the change and finding ways to thrive in the new landscape.

It's about understanding that the AI revolution is not a threat to be feared but an opportunity to grow, innovate, and connect with customers in new and meaningful ways.

What's a revolution?

It's a chance to look back to look forward, to understand where we've been and where we're going. The AI revolution is just beginning, and it will reshape the way we do business, engage with customers, and drive growth.

It's not just about technology; it's about a mindset, a willingness to embrace change, and a commitment to leading the charge.

It's about recognizing that the AI revolution is not a distant future but a present reality, and it's all about progress, innovation, and customer-centric growth.

The AI Revolution: Fueled by Data

The AI Paradigm: 3 Steps to Success

Just as a revolution needs a strategy, implementing AI requires a clear and concise approach. Andrew Ng, a prominent figure in the field of artificial intelligence, has a great beginner course on coursera called AI for Everyone , that could get your started on your journey.

As you will see, it's not about jumping in blindly; it's about understanding the process and following the steps to success.

I've summarized a basic approach below:

  • Start Small: Begin with a small pilot project that can show quick results. This helps in building momentum and gaining buy-in from stakeholders.

  • Data Preparation: Before you can harness the power of AI, you need to know what you're looking for. It's about expertly determining your goals and articulating them. Good data is the backbone of your AI efforts, and it starts with preparation.

  • Data Tuning: Once you have your data, it's time to fine-tune it. It's about aligning your data with your goals, ensuring that it's ready to drive insights and value.

  • Analysis: The final step is analysis. It's about taking the prepared and tuned data and transforming it into actionable insights, driving business growth and customer satisfaction.

Data: The Backbone of the AI Revolution

Data is more than just numbers, facts and files; it's the engine that powers the AI revolution.

Quality data, tailored to your goals and needs, is crucial for AI to be effective. But achieving this quality isn't solely about performing audits or usage guidelines.

It's a multifaceted approach that involves system design, integration, business rules, and effective training.

The Data Quality Quagmire: Disparate Systems and Silos

The issue of fragmented data systems has been a long-standing challenge for most businesses. Imagine the chaos of managing separate systems for Accounting/ERP, Marketing, Sales ("CRM"), and Customer Service.

Where does the "Correct" data live? How many different systems do you have?

The most extreme case I've encountered involved a client juggling 27 different systems, each with its own version of overlapping data.

Employees found themselves constantly switching between systems, wasting valuable time and grappling with manual data synchronization. This setup was not only inefficient but also placed an undue burden on staff tasked with keeping the data accurate across platforms.

Employee engagement and morale were low. Sound familiar?

As businesses grow from startup to full operations, it's common to adopt a piecemeal approach to systems.

You start with QuickBooks for accounting, add a CRM for sales tracking, introduce a ticketing system for customer service, and so on. On top of these formal systems, there's often a plethora of specialized spreadsheets filling in the gaps.

While it's easy to sign up for another SaaS system to fill a perceived need, the end result is a fragmented landscape where your most valuable asset—customer data—is scattered across various silos. What a mess!"

Harnessing Data Quality for AI Success: Microsoft's Dataverse and Beyond

Microsoft's Dataverse may offer a solution! It provides a common data model, enabling seamless data sharing across applications and business processes from a centralized database.

This eliminates data silos and facilitates the consolidation of data across various business functions.

Coupled with Microsoft's no-code/low-code tools like Power Platform, Dataverse simplifies the once-daunting task of system consolidation.

As the AI revolution accelerates, the imperative to stay competitive will naturally drive businesses to prioritize data quality. Tools like Dataverse, Dynamics 365, and Power Platform stand ready to guide the way.

In this transformative era of AI, data transcends mere numbers; it's the gateway to innovation and growth. We must not only recognize the importance of quality data but also embrace the tools that unlock its potential.

From shifting our mindset to growth-oriented thinking to leveraging cutting-edge tools, the following principles illuminate our path to a future where AI enriches customer relationships and delivers unparalleled value:

  1. Unlocking Revolutionary Value: AI's success relies on quality data, forming the bedrock for transformative outcomes.

  2. Embrace Growth Over Disruption: Gear up for the future by embracing a growth-centric perspective, transcending mere technological shifts.

  3. Data as a Strategic Asset: Elevate data from a mere tool to a catalyst for innovation and expansion.

  4. Maximize Data's Potential: Harness tools like Dataverse and Power Platform to tap into data's full potential, enhancing efficiency and insight.

  5. Put Customers at the Core: Strategically use data to prioritize customer relationships and growth, aligning technology with a customer-first approach.
